This is one of the great classic walks of North Wales with stunning views of Vale of Llangollen and the Berwyn Mountains, plus plenty of scenic variety and considerable historic interest. Initially there is a steep climb to the scanty remains of Castell Dinas Bran, a superb viewpoint above Llangollen, followed by a rather easier descent and a lovely walk below the limestone cliffs of Vale Crucis Abbey. The route continues over Velvet Hill to the Horseshow Falls on the River Dee, and the final stretch is a relaxing stroll through the valley along the towpath of the Shropshire Union Canal.

Llyn Brenig is situated amidst forests and rolling moorlands of Myndd Hiraethog. This clear way marked route of the reservoir uses a mix of lakeside tracks and forest roads. There is a rather boggy and muddy path at the half way point. It is a relatively flat walk but is quite long and can feel really long if the weather is poor! Please bring plenty of warm layers, waterproof clothing and food in case the weather is bad as not all sections of the walk are in forests so can be quite windswept and exposed.
There is a cafe and toilets at the start/end but there are none on the route itself.
Cafe opens 8am - 3pm (food served until 2.30pm). Does take Credit Cards but £10 minimum spend so bring cash if you want to buy something.
Car parking £1.50 (gates are locked at 4pm)

Ascent – 424 metres
As you head west on the M65 and approach Junction 3 you are confronted by what appears to be a small mountain with a rocket on the top. This is, in fact, Jubilee Tower, and its apparent height is slightly deceptive. Certainly the climb to the top of Darwen Moor is rather gentler than you might have believed, and of course the views from the Tower are marvellous. The walk is therefore described as easy/moderate with 9 miles of mixed woodland, reservoirs, moorland, deciduous woods, and lush meadows. The paths are all very straightforward in terms of surface and ease of navigation, but there is some climbing to be done. Much of the early and closing sections of the walk are along the Witton Weavers’ Way with very little on-road walking.

The route is mainly through woodland, beside reservoirs and across open moorland with superb and extensive views. Soon after the start, the walk passes White Coppice, where the cricket ground has long been considered the most picturesque in Lancashire. Towards the end, the route passes through Lead Mines Clough, an important part of Lancashire’s industrial heritage. This is a long walk, but not unduly difficult, though it has considerable potential for wet and muddy conditions.

This walk is delightful throughout. The hard work is soon accomplished on the walk onto the fells as soon as Settle is left behind and then after gasping for breath the rest of the day is a joy to behold. There are treats galore in store for lovers of natural beauty with Catrigg Force waterfall being the first jewel to appreciate on this treasure trove outing. After Catrigg Force there are many opportunities to visit caves including Jubilee Cave, Victoria Cave and Attermire Cave. Then to cap off the walk there is a final delight in store at Scalebor Force waterfall before walking back to Settle via Sugar Loaf Hill.
One word of advice. Don't forget to take your camera on this walk. You'll certainly regret leaving it behind!

This is an excellent and interesting area. The walk takes in the spectacular Peak District views of the Roaches and the creepy and historically interesting Lud's Church. The deep crack in the ground was once the secret place of worship for the Lollards who in the 14th Century were some of the earliest protestants. It is also said to be the fabled Green Chapel where the Green Knight is said to have held court. Another highlight is the Hanging Stone where Keira Knightly stood looking all wind swepped in Pride and Prejudice. This is an interesting and rewarding walk. There is also a pub on route time permitting.

A fantastic walk that involves a spectacular scramble to the top of Pavey Ark via Jack's Rake. The Rake is classed as a grade 1 scramble and it does involve regular use of your arms to pull you up to some of the steeper parts of the ascent. There are also some places that are exposed so a head for heights is certainly required. Having said that the scramble is not at all difficult for experienced fell walkers.

This undemanding walk explores the countryside of Southwest Cheshire to the south and east of Malpas. There are fine views looking across the hills of North Wales and there is also a nice little pub half way along the walk.
This is an excellent and comparatively easy walk that I first went on when I was at school. The route follows the Afon Glasyn river from Bedgelert up to the edge of Lyn Dinas. Here the route swings to the right in a 300m climb to a pass. The walk then drops down into a valley passing the ruins of mines to the base of the valley. Here there used to be a cool tunnel that has now been closed. The route now follows the river back to Beddgelert and the pub.
This is a short and fun walk. I am reluctant to put it as an easy due to the climb at the beginng and the final section that involves climbing over boulders to get to the other end of the tunnel.

Apparently Penycloddiau means ‘Hill of the Dykes’ and has a large iron age fort at its summit. This is an ideal walk for a clear day in late summer or autumn when the reward is some lovely views.
[I’ve included some photos from the book I’ve taken the route from. If this wasn’t really long enough, we could extend it to include Moel Arthur – there seems to be a number of routes covering this]
